Mosquito biology and control suggestions
Habitat · Biological Cycle · Suggestions

Despite the great efforts undertaken by the MCS to control all breeding places in the region, some remain hidden on the private properties.

Given the mosquito's ability to colonize all stagnant water bodies, it is clear that anyone's home may inadvertently provide a major breeding place. Here we offer some suggestions as to how these situations might be dealt with:

1 Sewage pits or underground sewers kept in bad condition may produce mosquito larvae. Such places should be kept in good condition.
In underground sewage pits all joints should be tightly closed.
Air holes should be screened.

2 If the water table rises or there are broken or sewage pipes are broken or loose, cellars might flood, so:
All water pipes in the building should be checked regularly and kept in good condition, especially drainage pipes.
Check that cellars are not flooded. Should this happen, the water ought to be pumped out immediately.

3 All abandoned recipients in which water might accumulate should be properly disposed of.

4 If you need to store rainwater in drums do not keep it for more than 10 days and check regularly for larvae.

5 All pools of water in the open air can remain for a long time. We recommend building the drainage holes or siphons as low as possible so water levels never become very high.

6 Ornamental ponds are an ideal place for larvae. Fight them by introducing fish or other larval predators. .

As we have seen, stagnant water around your home or its garden can provide ideal conditions for mosquitoes. Please follow our recommendations and we should be able to eliminate mosquitoes.
